NEW! Improv / Sketch Comedy Class
Friday Evening 6:00-7:00 pm - Teens ages 13-19
Taught by Broadway's Matt Ban
What is improv comedy and how do you do it well? This exciting new class at Stage Artistry Studios in New Bedford will be taking techniques and philosophies from the 3 most noted comedy programs in the country (UCB- based in NYC, Second City- based in Chicago, and The Groundlings- based in LA) including improv games, character studies, and understanding “the game” - what makes something funny! The class will also explore sketch comedy and learning to write their own sketches.
The class will start with the basics of improv. Students will create characters, understand how to support others in a scene, and how to create something absurd from something mundane. They will learn to think on their feet and be quick in responding to scene partners. Students will also learn the rules of improv, including the well-known “yes, and” rule and how to break it!
Once foundations are built, the class will start to discuss the different styles of improv.
For the sketch section of the class, students will learn to create absurd characters based on heightened impressions of real people and topical figures. Students will learn how to structure sketch scenes and learn how to deliver a joke.
At the end of the year, students will put all their skills on display in a final improv/sketch showcase. The class is going to become our very own SAS improv team. Team members will support each other, and each member will be featured in some way.
